246 State of Maryland Caroline County to wit Whereas Application hath been made to me by a negro woman named Caroline Hicks for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulatto's are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born And whereas also upon the oath of John G Faulkner of Caroline John Williams of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro ^wo^man named Caroline Hicks for whom this Certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant her said application and hereby Certify that from her own account she is now about twenty two years of age five feet Six & a half inches high or thereabouts of a black complexion was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid and has a small scar on her left wrist and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe (seal) my name and affix the seal of Caroline County Court this 30th day of August ^January^ Anno Domini 1849 James H Fountain Clk of Caroline County Court State of Maryland Caroline County to wit Whereas Application hath been made to me by a negro woman named Mary Ellen Scott for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoe's are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon the oath of John G Faulkner ^Spencer Hitch^ of Caroline county aforesaid that the said negro man woman named |
