247 Mary Ellen Scott for whom this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that from her own account she is now about Eighteen years of age Five feet three inches high or thereabouts of a black complexion was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid and has a large s no notable marks or scars that I have observed In Testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribe my (seal) name and affix the seal of Caroline County Court this 15th ^3d^ day of August ^April^ Anno Domini 1849 James H. Fountain Clk of Caroline County Court State of Maryland Caroline County to wit Be it remembered Whereas application hath been made to me by a negro woman named George W. Calwell for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattos are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born And whereas also upon the oath of Sarah Wootten of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named George W Caldwell for whom this Certificate is made was free born. I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from his own account he is now about twenty one years of age five feet four & a half inches high or thereabouts ^of a^ dark Chesnutt Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid and has a large scar or mark on the left arm below the elbow & has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the seal of Caroline County Court (seal) this 16th day of May A.
