244 State of Maryland Caroline County to wit Whereas application hath been made to me by a negro man named Stanley Saulsbury for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born And whereas also upon the oath of Benjamin Kirby of Talbot County that the said negro man named Stanley Saulsbury for whom this Certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from his own account he is now about twenty two years of age five feet ten & three quarter inches high or thereabouts of a Black Complexion was born in Caroline County ^aforesaid^ & raised in Talbott County aforesaid & has both little fingers crooked at the second joint as if broke and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed In Testimony whereof I hereunto (seal) subscribe my name and affix the seal of Caroline County Court this 31st day of October A D 1848 James H Fountain Clk of Caroline County Court State of Maryland Caroline County to wit whereas application hath been made to me by a negro man named Isaac Mason for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of Assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born.
