243 Caroline County to wit Whereas application hath been made to me by a negro woman named Rachel Johnson for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts free negroes & mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of freedom. And whereas upon information of my own knowledge that the said negro woman named Rachel for whom this certificate is made is the same person manumitted & set free by me by a Deed of manumission dated the 29th of April 1848 & recorded in liber J H F No Y folio 20 one of the land record Books of Caroline County. I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that she was about thirty five years of age at the date of said manumission five feet two & one half inches high or thereabout & of a dark chesnutt complexion & has a large scar on her left cheek & temple & a large black mole on the left arm & has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and (Seal) affix the seal of Caroline County Court this 30th day of October A D 1848 James H Fountain clk of Caroline County Court State of Maryland Caroline County to wit whereas application hath been made to me by a negro woman named Sarah E. Barwick for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born, And whereas also upon the oath of Samuel Cooper of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman named Sarah E. Barwick for whom this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that from her own account she is now about eighteen years of age five feet four inches high or thereabouts of a mulatto complexion was born & raised in Caroline COunty & has a small scar over her right eye & one small do on her left wrist and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my (Seal) name & affix the seal of Caroline County Court this 31st day of October A D 1848 James H Fountain clk of Caroline County Court |
