Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Caroline County to wit.  Whereas application hath been made
to me by a negro woman named Harriett A. Murry for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such case made
and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are
permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a Certificate
of being free born, and whereas also upon the oath of James
Swann of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman
named Harriet A. Murry for whom this certificate is made
was free born, I do therefore grant her said application and
hereby certify that from her own account she is now about
Nineteen years of age five feet & three inches high or thereabouts
of a chesnutt Complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County aforesaid and has a small scar on the left arm between
the elbow and wrist and has no other notable marks or scars that
I have observed.     In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe ^set^ my
                               name ^hand^ and affix the seal of Caroline County
    (Seal)                  Court this 12th day of September ^A. D.^ 1848

for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly
in such case made and provided by which said acts free negroes and
mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon the
obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon
the oath of Charles Edgell of Caroline County aforesaid that the
said negro woman named Mary Eliza Brown for whom this Certificate
is made was free born I do therefore grant her said application
and hereby certify that from her own account she is now about
Eighteen years of age Four feet Eleven inches high or thereabouts
of a chesnutt Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County
aforesaid and has a small scar on the right thumb and has no
other notable marks or scars that I have observed.      I Testimony
       whereof I hereunto set ^subscribe^ my hand ^name^ and affix the seal of Caroline ^County^ Court this 5th day of
