Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Caroline County Court to wit.  Whereas application hath been made to
me by a negro woman named Emily Ann Murry for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made
and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are
permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a
Certificate of being free born.   And whereas also upon the oath
of James Swann of Caroline County ^aforesaid^ that the said negro
woman named Emily Ann Murry for whom this Certificate
is made was free born I do therefore grant her said application
and hereby certify that from her own account she is now
about twenty five years of age five feet three and a half inches
high or thereabouts of a dark chesnutt Complexion was born
and raised in Caroline County aforesaid and has a scar on
the right arm and has two small ones on the left arm
occasioned by a burn the scars on both arms below the elbows
and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
                                  In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
(seal)                     my name and affix the seal of Caroline County
                             Court this 12th day of September A. D. 1848

upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon the
Oath of James Swann of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman named
Rhoda Murry for whom this certificate is made was free born.  I do therefore grant
her said application and hereby certify that from her own account she is now
about twenty three years of age five feet four inches high or thereabouts
of a dark chesnutt Complexion ^and was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid^ and has four scars on her right arm
near the elbow and another small scar on the breast just below the Collar
               bone.  And has no other notable marks and scars as I have observed

               seal of Caroline County Court this 12th day of September A. D. 1848
