Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit, whereas application
hath been made to me by a negro man named Curtis Thomas
for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the Acts of Assembly in
such case made and provided by which said acts free negroe's
and mullattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon the
obtention of a certificate of being free born; and whereas also
upon the oath of Henry Bowdle of Caroline County aforesaid
that the said negro man named Curtis Thomas for whom this
certificate is made was free born.  I do therefore grant his said
application and hereby certify that from his own account
he is now about twenty three years of age five feet nine
inches high or thereabouts was born in Dorchester and raised
in Caroline County and has a small scar of a cut on his
forehead and another scar on the right side of his neck occasioned
by a gathering and his complexion black and
has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
                         In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe
(seal)                 my name and affix the seal of Caroline
                         County Court this 29th day of March

her freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such case made and provided
by which said acts free negroes & mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this
state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon the
oath of Elcanah Willson of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman named
Mary Jane Wright for whom this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant
her said application and hereby certify that from her own account she is now
about eighteen years of age five feet one inch high or thereabouts was born & raised in
Caroline County and has a small scar of a cut on the left wrist also one small do on
the middle joint of the forefinger of the left hand of a dark chesnutt complexion and has no
other notable marks or scars that I have observed  In Testimony whereof I hereunto
             subscribe my name and affix the seal of Caroline County Court this
