232 County and has a small scar on his right arm between the elbow & wrist also a large scar on the left ankle and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name and affix (seal) the seal of Caroline County Court this 25th day of January A. D. 1848 James H Fountain Clerk of Caroline County Court State of Maryland Caroline County to wit Whereas application hath been made to me by a negro woman named Elizabeth Hanes for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas alson upon the oath of William H Gootee Esqr of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman named Elizabeth Hanes for whom this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that from her own account she was twenty four years of age in October last (1847) four feet eleven inches high or thereabouts of a light chesnut Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid and has no notable marks or scars that I have observed In Testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed the seal of Caroline County Court (Seal) this 24th day of March AD 1848 James H Fountain clk of Caroline County Court |
