Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit, Whereas application hath been
made to me by a negro woman named Comfort Bell for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such case made
and provided by which said acts free negroes and mullatoes are
permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born, And whereas also upon the oath of Tilghman H
Hubbard of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman
named Comfort Bell for whom this certificate is made was
free born, I do therefore grant her said application and hereby
certify that from her own account she is now about seventeen
years of age five feet two inches high or thereabouts of a chesnutt
complexion was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid
& has a scar occasioned by a burn on her right wrist & also
a small scar on the middle joint of the forefinger of the
right hand and has no other notable Marks or scars that
I have observed               In Testimony whereof I hereto
(     State )                       subscribe my name and affix

(Maryland)                       this 29th day of September AD 1847

by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted
to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate
of being freeborn and whereas also upon the oath of
James Sheilds of Caroline County aforesaid that the
said negro man named John Fountain for whom
this certificate was made was free born I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby certify that
from his own account he is now about twenty two
years of age five feet five & one half inches high or thereabouts
