Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit whereas application hath
been made to me by a negro man named William Byrn for a
certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such case
,made and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes
are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born and whereas also upon the affirmation of
Richard H Wright of the County aforesaid that the said William
Byrn for whom this certificate is made was free born.  I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby certify that from his
own account he is now about twenty one years of age five
feet eight & one half inches high or thereabouts was born
and raised in Caroline County aforesaid of a black complexion
as has a scar over the left eye extending towards the ear and
a small scar below the same eye also a large scar on the
back of the right hand just below the thumb joint and
has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed

to the acts of assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts free negroes
and mulatto's are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born and whereas also upon the affirmation of Thomas Stanton of
Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman named Susan Chatman for
whom this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant her said application
and hereby certify that from her own account she is twenty six years of age on the 16th
day of October next five feet three & ¾ inches high or thereabouts of a chesnut complexion
was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid & has a large scar on her right
temple also one on her fore head over the left eye both occasioned by cuts also a scar on her
right wrist occasioned by a burn and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
