Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application
hath been made to me by a negro man named Harrison Webb
for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such
Case made and provided by which said Acts free negroes and mulattoes
are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born and whereas also upon the oath of Thomas H. Slaughter
of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named
Hanson Webb for whom this certificate is made is free born I do
therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from his
own account he is now about twenty four years of age five
feet five and one half inches high or thereabouts of a Mulatto
Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid
and has a scar of a cut on the lower part of his left shin and
has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal of)        In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name
(County)       and affix the seal of Caroline County Court this
( Court )       30.th day of May Anno Domini 1847

certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case
made and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are
permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born and whereas also upon the oath of Purnell Todd of
Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named Peter Ennalls
Foster for whom this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant
his said application and hereby certify that from his own account
he is now about twenty two years of age five feet seven & a half inches
high or thereabouts of a black complexion was born and raised in
Caroline County aforesaid and has no notable marks or scars that
I have observed      In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and
(Seal of Caroline)   affix the seal of County County Court this 1.st day of June 1847
