Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been
made to me by a negro man named Hanson Johns for a certificate of
his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made and
provided by which said Acts free negroe's and mulattoe's are permitted
to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being
free born:  And whereas also upon the oth of Thomas Blades of caroline
County aforesaid; that the said negro man named Hanson
Johns for whom this certificate is made was free born; I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby certify that from his
own account he is now about twenty six years of Age five feet
seven inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in caroline
county aforesaid complexion Black and has a scar of a cut over
his left eye and has no other notable marks or scars that I have
observed
(       seal of        )      In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name
(Caroline County)      and affix the seal of Caroline County Court
(       Court         )      this 15.th day of May 1847

to the acts of assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts
free negroes and mulattoe's are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention
of aa Certificate of being free born ^and whereas also upon the oath of Thomas H. Slaughter of Caroline County aforesaid that the said the said negro man named James Webb for whom this certificate is made was free born^ I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby Certify that from his own account he is now about twenty two
years of age five feet eleven and three fourth inches high or thereabouts was born
and raised in Caroline County aforesaid and of a mulatto Complexion
and has a scar of a cut on the inner part of the Cap of his left Knee
and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
( seal of)               In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name
(County)               and affix the seal of Caroline County Court this
( Court )               30th day of May A D. 1847
