Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been
made to me by a negro man named Caleb Eaton for a certificate of
his freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such case made and
provided by which said acts free negroes and Mulatto's are permitted
to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free
born; And whereas also upon the oath of John Collins Esquire of
Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named Caleb
Eaton for whom this certificate is made was free born; I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby certify that from his own account
he is now about twenty one years of age five feet four and one
half inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline
County aforesaid of a chesnut Complexion and has no notable
marks or scars that I have observed
(Seal of Caroline)      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
(  County Court )       name and affix the seal of Caroline County Court
                                 this fifteenth day of September Anno Domini 1846

to Me by a negro woman named Judith Wilkinson for a certificate of her
freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided
by which said acts free negroes and Mulattoe's are permitted to travel
out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born; And
Whereas also upon the oath of John W. Moore of Caroline County aforesaid
that the said negro woman named Judith Wilkinson for whom this
certificate is made was free born.  I do therefore grant her said application
and hereby certify that from her own account she is now about
forty three years ^of age^ five feet five & one half inches high or thereabouts
was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid of a dark complexion
and has a scar on her left arm between the elbow and wrist and
has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(    Seal of      )      In Testimony Whereof I hereunto subscribe my
(    Caroline    )      name and affix the seal of Caroline County Court this
(County Court)      first day of October Anno Domini 1846
