Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been
heretofore to wit on the Second day of June Eighteen hundred and
Eighteen a certain James Sangston by Deed of Manumission duly
executed acknowledged and recorded among the Land records of
Caroline County did among others manumit and Set free a
certain negro girl called Sarah Ann (now calling herself Sarah)
ANn Stanton) to be free when She Should arrive to the age of
thirty years.  And the said Sarah Ann (now calling herself Sarah
Ann Stanton) having made application to me for a certificate of
her freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case
made and provided; And whereas also upon the Oath of
Robert K. Collison of Caroline County aforesaid that the said
negro girl named Sarah Ann (now calling herself Sarah Ann
Stanton for whom this certificate is made is the same person
mentioned in the said Manumission.  I do therefore grant
her Said application and hereby certify that from her age
as expressed in the Said Manumission she is now about thirty
one years of age five feet three quarters of an inch high
or thereabouts of a mulatto Complexion was born and raised
in Caroline County aforesaid and has no notable marks
or scars that I have observed
(Seal of Caroline)      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
(      County       )      name & affix the Seal of Caroline County Court this
(       Court        )      4.th day of September Anno Domini 1846

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application
hath been made to me by a negro woman named Lucy Ann
Baynard for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts of
assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts
free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this
state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born
and whereas also upon the oath of Nathan Whitley Esqr of
Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman named
Lucy Ann Baynard for whom this certificate is made was
