Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

observed      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix
(seal)   the public seal of my office this 11th day of May anno Domini

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas application hath been made to me
by a coloured boy named Alfred Steward for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably to the
act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and molattoes
are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a Certificate of being
freedom and whereas also upon the oath of Henry Clift of Caroline County that the
said coloured boy named Alfred Stewart was free born I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby certify that from his own account he will be Nineteen years of
age the Fifteenth day of August next five feet five and a half inches high or thereabouts
was born and raised in Caroline County of a dark brown Complexion has a small scar
of a cut near the corner of his right eye and no other notable marks or scars that
I have observed      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
(seal)   public seal of my office this 20th day of May anno Domini 1829

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; whereas application hath been
made to me by a negro named John Westley Bryan for a certificate of his
freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by
which said act free negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this state
upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon
the oath of William A Ford of Caroline County that the said negro last
named John Westley Bryan for whom this certificate is made was free
born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from
his own account he is about fifteen years of age five feet four and a half inches
or thereabouts of a bright molatto complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County has a very small scar of a cut on the left side of his nose and three
other scars of a different size about the second joint of his little finger and a
large scar of a cut across his ^right^ instep and no other notable marks or scars that
I have observed;  In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and
(seal)    affix the public seal of my office this 9th day of June anno Domini 1829
