Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas application hath
been made to me by a negro man named William Prattis for a certificate
of his freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such case made
and provided by which said act free negroes and moltoes are permitted
to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free
born and whereas also upon the oath of Thomas Snow of caroline county
that the said negro man named William Prattis for whom this certificate
is made was free born I do therefore grant his said application and
hereby certify that from his own account he ^was^ thirty three years of age
thereabouts of a molatto complexion was born and raised in caroline
county has two small scars on the upper part of the left side of the
forehead caused as he says by a cart whell running over his head and no
other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
           seal of my office this 1st day of August Anno Domini 1829

of his freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such case made and
provided by which said act free negroes and mollattoes are permitted to travel
out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and
whereas also upon the oath of John Whitby of caroline county that the said
negro man named William Chamberlain for whom this certificate is made
was free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify
that from his own account he was twenty one years of age in ^the second day of^ August
Instant five feet five and three quarter inches high or thereabouts of a
Complexion nearly black was born and raised in Caroline County
and has a scar on the left part of side of the upper of his forehead
nearly in the shape of a right angle and another small scar of a cut
on the right side of h is nose and another small scar of a cut burn
on his right cheek near the nose several small scars on his left hand
and a large scar of a cut on his right shin and no other notable
