(seal of Caroline)      affix the seal of Caroline County Court this twenty fifth
(  County Court )      day of April Eighteen hundred and forty six

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been
made to me by a negro man named John Elbert Wright for a certificate
of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and
provided by which said act free negroes and mulatto's are permitted
to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being
free born.  And whereas also upon the oath of Joshua Clark of
Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named
John Elbert Wright for whom this Certificate is made was free
born; I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify
that from his own account he was twenty one years of age on the
twenty ninth day of August last past five feet five and one
half inches high or thereabouts of a dark Complexion was born
and raised in Caroline County and has a scar on the lower part
of his forehead near the right eye and has no other notable marks
or scars that I have observed
(            Seal of            )      In Testimony Whereof I hereunto subscribe my
(Caroline County Court)      name and affix the seal of Caroline County Court
                                           this 4.th day of May Anno Domini 1846

to the acts of Assembly in such Case made and Provided by which said acts
free negroes and mulatto's are permitted to travel out of this State upon the
obtention of a certificate of being free born  And Whereas also upon the oath
of Whiteley Johnson of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman
named Ann Eaton for whom this certificate is made was free born; I do
therefore grant her Said application and hereby Certify that from
