State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas application hath
been made to me by a negro woman named Catharine Johnson for a
Certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case
made and Provided by which said acts free negroes and Mulattoes
are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born; And whereas also upon the Oath of Joshua
Clarke of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman
named Catharine Johnson for whom this Certificate is made
was free born.   I do therefore grant her said application and hereby
Certify that from her own Account she is now about twenty four years
of age five feet four inches high or thereabouts was born and
raised in Caroline County aforesaid of a black Complexion and
has lost part of the fore finger on her left hand and also the
Middle finger on her left right hand is rather shorter than usual
and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal of Caroline)      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe My name &
(  County Court )      affix the seal of Caroline County Court this sixth
                                day of October Anno Domini Eighteen hundred and
                                forty five

his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made made and
provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted
to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free
born; And whereas also upon the oath of WIlliam W. Lucas of Talbot
County and State aforesaid that the said negro man named Edmund
Wisher for whom this Certificate is made was free born   I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby Certify that from his own account
he was twenty one years of age on the first day of July last past
five feet three and one half inches high or thereabouts of a chesnut
Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has no
