Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Thomas B. Culbreth of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman
named Rachel Thomas for whom this Certificate is made was free born
I do therefore grant her said application and hereby Certify that
from her own Account she is now about thirty years of age five
feet three & one half inches high or thereabouts of a dark chesnut
Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County has a
small scar on the fore finger of her left hand and the middle joint
of three fingers on her right hand are enlarged (occasioned as she
says by washing) and has no other notable marks or scars that I
have observed
(seal of Caroline)             In Testimony Whereof I hereunto subscribe my
( County Court  )         name and affix the seal of Caroline County Court
                                   this 29.th day of July Anno Domini 1845

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath
been made to me by a negro woman named Susan Mason for a
Certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such case
made made and provided by which said act free negroes and mulattos
are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a Certificate
of being free born And whereas also upon the oath of Thomas B
Culbreth of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman
named Susan Mason for whom this Certificate is made was free
born; I do therefore grant her said application and hereby Certify
that from her own account she is now about twenty nine years
of age five feet four and one half inches high or thereabouts
of a dark chesnut Complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County aforesaid & has a large wart on her right shoulder blade
and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(       Seal of       )      In Testimony Whereof I hereunto subscribe my
(Caroline County)      name and affix the seal of Caroline County
(         Court       )      Court this 29.th day of July Anno Domini 1845
