State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; whereas
application hath been made to me by a negro man Named
Charles Lewis for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably to the
acts of Assembly in Such Case made and provided by
which said acts free negroes and mulattoe's are permitted to
travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of
being free born; And whereas also upon the Oath of Samuel
Shawn of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro
man named Charles Lewis for whom this Certificate is made
was free born; I do therefore grant his Said application &
hereby Certify that from his own account he was twenty
two years of age in January last past five feet ten inches
high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline County
aforesaid and of a black Complexion and has no notable
marks or Scars that I have observed
(seal of Caroline)      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
( County Court  )      My name and affix the seal of Caroline
                                County Court this 4th day of June Anno

Certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case
made and provided by which said act free negroes and mulattoes are
permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a Certificate of
being free born and whereas also upon the affirmation of Willis
Corkrin of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man
named Littleton Hubbard for whom this Certificate is made was
free born; I do therefore grant his Said application and hereby
Certify that from his own account he was thirty Six years of age
on the 10th day of June last past five feet Seven and one half
inches high or thereabouts of a dark chesnut Complexion was born
and raised in Caroline County and has a Small Scar on the back
