application and hereby Certify that from his age as expressed in the
said manumission he was twenty six years of age on the twenty
eighth day of May last past five feet eight and three quarter
inches high or thereabouts of a dark Complexion was born and
raised in Caroline County and has a scar on the inner part of his
left hand and has no other notable marks or scars that I
    have observed                    In Testimony Whereof I hereunto
(Seal of Caroline)      subscribe my name and affix the seal of Caroline
(  County Court )      County Court this twelfth day of March
                                Eighteen hundred and forty five

State of Maryland  Caroline County to wit; Whereas application
hath been made to me by a negro man named John Brooks
for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly
in such Cases made and provided by which said acts free
negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon
the obtention of a certificate of being free born.  And whereas also upon
the Oath of Thomas V. Bishop of Caroline County aforesaid that
the said negro man named John Brooks for whom this certificate
is made was free born; I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby Certify that from his own account he was
twenty nine years of age in January last past five feet two
and three quarter inches high or thereabouts was born and raised
in Caroline County aforesaid and of a black Complexion has
three small scars on the back of his left hand near the thumb
joint and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(       seal of        )      In Testimony Whereof I hereunto subscribe my
(Caroline County)      name and affix the seal of Caroline County Court
(        Court        )      this fourth day of April Eighteen hundred &
