Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made to me by a negro man named
Benjamin Wayman for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such cases
made and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this
State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born:  and whereas also upon the oath of James
B Hicks of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man Benjamin Wayman for whom
this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant his said application and do hereby
certify that from his own account he will be twenty years of age in August next is five feet
seven and half inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline County is of a
dark brown complexion and has no notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)            In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal
                      of my office this 22.d day of May anno Domini 1844

freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such Cases made and provided
by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of
this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born  And whereas
also upon the oath of James Pippen sen.r of Caroline County aforesaid that
the said negro man Wesley Groves for whom this certificate is made was
free born  I do therefore grant his said application and hereby Certify
that upon his own account he was Twenty four years of age the fifteenth
day of May last is five feet nine and half inches high or thereabouts
was born and raised in Caroline County is of a black Complexion and
has a scar on the back of his right hand and another scar on the
knuckle of the fore finger of his left hand and has no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed
(Seal)                  In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
                         name and affix the Public Seal of my office this
                         Eleventh day of June Anno Domini Eighteen
                         hundred and forty four
