Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

       State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; whereas application hath
been made to me by a negro woman named Louiza Emory for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided
by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travil out of
this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas
also upon the oath of Jesse D Hicks of Caroline county aforesaid that
the said negro woman named Louiza Emory for whome this certificate
is made was free born  I do therefore grant her said application and hereby
certify that from her mothers account she is now about sixteen years
of age five feet and one inch high or thereabouts was born and raised
in Caroline County aforesaid and of a brown complexion and has no
notable marks or scars that I have observed  In testimony whereof I
(seal)               hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of
                      my office this 8th day of April A D 1844

man named William Roberts for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such cases
made and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state
upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born:  And whereas also upon the oath of Robert Thawley of
Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man William Roberts for whom this certificate is made
was free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby ^certify^ that from his own account he was
twenty one years of age some time in March last is five feet seven and three quarter inches high or
thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline County is of a black complexion and has a small horizontal
scar under the outer corner of his left eye and two scars of a burn on the outside of the calf of his
left leg and another scar of a burn on the outside of his right knee and a scar of a cut on the fore
part of the same knee and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)                     In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of my
                             office this 22.d day of May anno Domini 1844
