State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application
hath been made to me by a negro woman named Henny Groves
for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such
cases made and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes
are permitted to travil out of this state upon the obtention of
a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon the oath
of James Pippen senr of Caroline County aforesaid that the said
negro woman for whom this certificate is made was free born
I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify
that upon her own account she was Thirty one years of age
the fifteenth day of September last is five feet four and a half
inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline
County is of a dark brown Complexion and has a small scar
crosswise her right cheek and another small scar on her
left arm below the elbow joint and has no ^other^ notable marks or
scars that I have observed
(seal)            In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
                    name and affix the public seal of my office this
                    Eleventh day of June Anno Domini Eighteen
                    hundred and forty four

acts free negroe's and mulattoes are permitted to travel out
of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free
born; And whereas also upon the Oath of Thomas H Slaughter
of Caroline County afs.d that the said negro man named
William H Price for whom this certificate is made was free
born; I do therefore grant his said application and hereby
Certify that from his own account he was twenty four years
of age on the first day of January last past five feet nine
