Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born; and whereas also upon the oath of
Henry Rathell of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman named Harriet
Shepherd for whom this certificate is made was free born; I do therefore grant her said
application and hereby certify that she is now about twenty one years of age five feet
and one fourth of an inch high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline County
and of a brown Complexion and has two scars on her left foot occasioned by a
gathering and a short toe on the same foot and has no other notable marks or
scars that I have observed      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name
(seal)            and affix the public seal of my office this sixth day of July A D.

State of Maryland Caroline County; to wit; whereas heretofore to wit; on the twenty
fifth day day of August Eighteen hundred and Eighteen a Certain Ann Pratt of
Caroline County by Deed of Manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded among
the land records of Caroline County did manumit and set free a certain negro boy named
John Freeman to be free on the first day of January Eighteen hundred and thirty nine
And the said negro man having made application to me for a Certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the acts of assembly in such Case made and provided, And Whereas
also upon the oath of John Williams of Caroline County aforesaid that the Said
negro man named John Freeman for whom this certificate is made is the same person
mentioned in the said manumission I do therefore grant his said application and do
hereby Certify that from his age as expressed in the said manumission he is now
about twenty eight years of age five feet ten and a half inches high or thereabouts
was born and raised in Caroline County Complexion black and has a scar of a cut
near his right eye about two and a half inches long and has another scar of a burn
on the inside of his right arm and just below the elbow joint and has no other notable
mark or scar that I have observed
