Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

of assembly in such case made and provided; And Whereas also upon the oath of
Martin Robinson of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named
Jefferson Jackson is the issue of the said negro woman named Dark and mentioned
in said manumission and that said negro man named Jefferson Jackson is
now free; I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from his
own account he was thirty three years of age some time in September last past
five feet five and one half inches high or thereabouts of black Complexion
was born and raised in Caroline County and has a large scar of a cut
commencing at the back of his neck head and ending under his left jaw and
another scar of a bite on his right breast and has no other notable marks or
scars that I have observed
(seal)               In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix
                       the public seal of my office this 18th day of June A D.

State of maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made to
me by a negro man named James Gibbs junr for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
to the acts of Assembly in such Cases made and provided by which ^said^ acts free
negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a
certificate of being free born; and whereas also upon the oath of Joseph M Bernard of
Caroline County aforesaid; that the said negro ^man^ named James Gibbs junr for whom
this Certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant his said application and
hereby Certify that fro his own account he was twenty ^two^ years of age on the
fourteenth day of February last past five feet eight high or thereabouts
was free born and raised in Caroline County Complexion black and has
a scar of a cut just above and between his eyebrows and has no other
notable mark or scar ^that I have observed^   In Testimony whereof I hereto Subscribe my
(Seal)                   name and affix my seal the public seal of my
                            office this 4.th day of July of A. D. 1842
