Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

act free negroes and moltoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention
of a certificate of being free born and whereas also on ^upon^ the oath of Nathan Whitby of
Caroline County that the said coloured ^man^ named Aaron Clarke for whom this certificate
is made was free born I do therefore grant his said application and
hereby certify that from his own account he was twenty one years of age in
March last five feet six and a quarter inches high or thereabouts was born and
raised in Caroline County of a complexion nearly black has a scar of a cut under
his left jaw between one and two inches in lengeth in a ridge above the
surface of the skin and no other notable markes or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal
           of my office this 7th day of April anno Domini 1829

State of Maryland Caroline county to wit;  Whereas heretofore to wit on the thirty
first day of May Eighteen hundred and twenty five a certain Elizabeth Dwiggans by
Deed of Manumission duly execute acknowledged and recorded among the Land
records of caroline county did manumit and set free a certain negro woman named
Jane Hudson formerly Jane Baily to be free from and after the date of the said
Manumission and the said negro woman named Jane Hudson formerly Jane Baily
having made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the act
of assembly in such case made and provided and whereas also upon the oath of
James Sangston of caroline county that the said negro woman named Jane Hudson
formerly Jane Baily for whom this certificate is made is the same person mentioned
in the said Manumission I do therefore grant her said application
and hereby certify that from her age as expressed in the said Manumission she
is about forty eight years of age five feet and one inch high or thereabouts was born
and raised in caroline county of a molto complexion has a large natural mark on her
right cheek and a scar of a cut nearly perpendicular over her right eye her finger next the
little finger of her right hand crooked and injured in the middle joint and no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed

           of my office this 11th day of April anno Domini 1829
