Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made to me
by a mulatto man named Jere Downes for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of
assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and mulattoes are permitted
to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born  And
whereas also upon the oath of Henry Cory of Caroline County that the said mulatto man
named Jere Downes for whom this certificate is made was freeborn I do therefore grant
his said application and hereby certify that according to his own account he was twenty
years of age in the month of November last about five feet six and a half inches high
of a mulatto complexion was born and raised in Caroline County Has a very small scar
on the left side of his nose and a large scar of a cut across the second joint of his left great
tow and no other notable mark or scar that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the pubic seal of my
           office this 25.th day of March anno Domini 1829

       State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  whereas application hath been made to me
by a coloured boy named Daniel Hindman for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act
of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and molattoes
are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free
born and whereas also upon the oath of Charles Ridgaway of Talbot County that the
said coloured boy named Daniel Hindman for whom this Certificate is made was
free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that he is five
feet eight and a half inches high or thereabouts says he was twenty years of age the
Eighteenth day of December last was born and raised in Caroline County and of a
black complexion has a scar across his right cheek a little below the outer corner of
his eye another scar of an ulcer on the left side of his chin or cheek and no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of
           my office this 25th day of March anno Domini 1829
