Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

this certificate is made was free born; I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby certify that he was twenty one years of age on the first day of June
last past five feet eight inches or thereabouts Complexion black and has a
scar of a cut on his breast and has no other notable marks or scars that I have
observed the said man Alfred Groce was born and raised in Caroline County
aforesaid

                            name and affix the Public seal of my office this

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas on the sixteenth day of February
in the year eighteen hundred and eleven a certain Daniel Anthony by deed of manumission
duly executed acknowledged and recorded among the land records of Caroline
County aforesaid did manumit and set free a certain ^negro^ boy named Daniel then five
years and nine months old to be free when he should arrive at the age of twenty five
years; And whereas the said negro boy (now man) named Daniel having made
application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of Assembly in
such cases made and provided And Whereas also upon the oath of Elizabeth H. Mason
of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named Daniel for whom this
certificate is made is the same person mentioned in the said manumission; I do
therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from his age as expressed
in said Manumission he was thirty five years of age on the sixteenth day
of February last past five feet five and a half inches high or thereabouts was born
and raised in Caroline County aforesaid complexion black and has a small scar
of a cut just over his left eye and another small scar of a cut between his under lip
and chin and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)                  In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix
                          the public seal of my office this fourth day of June Anno

to me by a negro ^mulatto^ woman named Lucretia Hooper for a certificate of her
freedom agreeably to the act of Assembly in such Case made and provided
