Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and molattoes
are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention the obtention of a certificate
of being free born and whereas also upon the oath of Bazil Cooper of Caroline
County that the said Coloured boy named Henry for whom this Certificate is made was
free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby Certify that from his own
account he is about seventeen years of age the last of september last about five
feet four and a quarter inches high or thereabouts of a brown molatto complexion was
born and raised in Caroline County has a small scar of a cut in the left eye brow and
nearly in a line with the brow and another scar of a cut in his right eye brown and
ranging with the brown and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
            seal of my office this 31st day of October anno Domini 1828

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas application heretofore to wit on the
Fifteenth day of January in the year Eighteen hundred and twenty nine a certain John
Jump of Elijah by Deed of Manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded among the
Land records of caroline county did manumit and set free a certain negro woman named Priscillia
Curtis to be free from and after the date of the said Manumission and the said negro woman
named Priscillia Curtis having made application to me for a certificate of her freedom
agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes
and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being
free born and whereas also upon the oath of John Jump of Elijah of Caroline County that the
said negro woman named Priscillia Curtis for whom this Certificate is made is the same
person mentioned in the said Manumission I do therefore grant her said application and
hereby certify that from her age as expressed in the said Manumission she will be twenty
five years of age on or about the Fourteenth day of February next five feet two and a half
inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in caroline county of a dark molatto complexion
has a small scar of a cut in her right eye brow and no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and
(seal)   affix the pubic seal of my office this 15th day of January anno Domini 1829
