Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and
Molattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of ^a certificate of^ being free
born and whereas also upon the oath of Bazil Cooper of Caroline county that the
said coloured woman ^named^ Sinai for whom this certificate is made was free born I do
therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that from her own account
she is about thirty nine years of age five feet four and a quarter inches high
or thereabouts of a molatto complexion was born and raised in caroline county
has a black mole on the left side of her upper lip and a scar of a cut rather on
the left side of the top of her forehead extending unto the hair and a small scar
of a burn on the under part of her right arm a little below the elbow joint and
no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
            seal of my office this 31st day of October anno Domini 1828

State of Maryland Caroline county to wit;  whereas application hath been made to me
by a coloured woman named Phillis for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the
act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and
molattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born and whereas the said coloured woman has proved to me
sattisfactorily by the Oath of Bazil Cooper of Caroline county that she obtained
her freedom by the Judgment of caroline county court that she is now free and has
been free for nearly thirty years I do therefore grant her said application and
hereby certify that from her own account she is sixty years of age five feet three
and a half inches high or thereabouts of a molatto complexion was born and
raised in caroline county she has a whitish wart or mole on the top of her
nose in a range with the corners of her eyes the end joints of both her little
fingers stiffened by the rheumatism and no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my
