Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Caroline County complexion black and has two scars on her left wrist
joint and a small scar on the back of her hand and has lost the end of her
middle finger on her right hand  And has no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed
(seal)                       In Testimony Whereof I hereto subscribe my name &
                               Affix the public seal of my Office this 8th day

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath
been made to me by a negro man named John Wayman for a Certificate of
his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided
by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this
State upon the obtention of a Certificate of being free born; And Whereas also
upon the oath of Matthew Saulsbury of Caroline County aforesaid that
the said negro man named John Wayman for whom this Certificate is made
was free born; I do therefore grant his said Application and hereby Certify
that from his own account he was twenty one years of age on the seventh
day of June in^s^tant five feet six and three quarter inches high or thereabouts
was born and raised in Caroline County and of a dark brown Complexion and
has a scar of a cut on the inside of his left foot and another scar of a cut on
his left forefinger and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)              In Testimony Whereof I hereto subscribe my name and
                      Affix the public seal of my office this 10th day of June

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas Application hath been
made to me by a mulattoe woman named Harriett Blay for a certificate of
her freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such case made and provided
by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this
State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born, And Whereas also
upon the oath of Abel Gowty of Caroline County Aforesaid that the said mulattoe
woman named Harriett Blay for whom this Certificate is made was
free born; I do therefore grant her said application and hereby Certify that from
her own account she was sixteen years of age some time in April last past
