Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made to
me by a coloured Girl named Henrietta for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the
act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and
molattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free and whereas also upon the oath of Walter D. Hardcastle of Caroline
County that the said coloured Girl named Henrietta was free born I do therefore
grant her said application and hereby certify that from her own account she
was seventeen years of age the fifteenth day of July last five feet two inches high
or thereabouts of a dark molatto complexion was born and raised in Caroline county
has a small scar of a cut on the right side of and lengthwise her nose and another
scar of a burn on the left side of her neck about seven tenths of an ^inch^ in diameter
and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
           In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
(seal)   seal of my office this 30th day of October anno Domini 1828

assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and molattoes are
permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free ^born^ and whereas also
upon the oath of Walter D. Hardcastle of Caroline County that the said coloured girl
named Fanny for whom this Certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant her said application
and hereby certify that from her own account she will be sixteen years of age
of the seventeenth day of November next five feet four and a half inches high or thereabouts
of a complexion nearly black was born and raised in Caroline County has a small scar of
a cut crosswise on her left cheek nearly in a range with the corner of her mouth and
another small scar of a cut across her left fore finger between the middle and hand joints
and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed      In Testimony whereof
(seal)   I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of my office this 30th
            day of October anno Domini 1828
