Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit      Whereas application hath been made
to me by a coloured woman named Susan Benson for a certificate of her freedom agreeably
to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes
and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a Certificate
of being free ^born^ and whereas also upon the oath of Samuel Plummer of Caroline County that
the said negro woman named Susan Benson for whim this Certificate is made was free
born I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that she is five feet three
and a half inches high or thereabouts about thirty five years of age was born and raised
in Caroline County of a complexion nearly black has a scar of a cut on her left wrist and
no other notable marks or scars that I have observed      In Testimony whereof
(seal)   I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of my office the 30th
           day of August anno Domini 1828                                 Jo Richardson  Clk of

    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;    Whereas heretofore to wit on the Fourth
day of January in the year Eighteen hundred and eight a certain John Barcus by Deed of
Manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded among the land records of Caroline
County did manumit and set free a certain negro woman named Rachel (now calling herself
Rachel Gibson) to be free from and after the first day of January Eighteen hundred and
eighteen and the said negro woman named Rachel (now calling herself Rachel Gibson)
having made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the act of assembly
in such case made and provided and whereas also upon the oath of Joseph Boon
of Caroline County that the said negro woman named Rachel (now calling herself Rachel
Gibson) for whom this Certificate is made is the same person mentioned in the said Manumission
I do therefore grant her said application and hereby Certify that from her age
as expressed in the said Manumission she was thirty nine years of age the fourth day
of January last was born in Talbot County and raised in Caroline County of a dark
molatto complexion five feet and one half inches high or thereabouts has a number of
small scars of burns on her right arm about and below the elbow joint and no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed

           seal of my office this 28th day of October anno Domini 1828
