Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

          State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been
made to me by a negro man named Henry Fountain for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the acts of assembly in such cases made and provided by which said acts
free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention
of a certificate of being free born; And Whereas also upon the oath of James
Pratt of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named Henry Fountain
for whom this certificate is made was born free I do therefore grant his
said application and hereby certify that from the account of the said James
Pratt he was twenty six years of age last Christmas that he is five feet seven
inches high or thereabout of a black complexion was born free and raised in
Caroline County and that his right hip appears to be higher and larger than
the left hip.      He has no notable marks or scars that I have observed
(county)      In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
(seal    )       seal of my office this 16.th day of September Anno Domini 1837

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application hath been
made to me by a negro boy named Perry Canada for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided by which said
acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon the
obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon the oath of John
Jump (of E) of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro boy named Perre Canada
for whom this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby certify that from his own account he was eighteen years of age on the
twentieth day of April Last past five feet nine and a quarter inches high or thereabouts
was born and raised in Caroline County and has ^several^ a small scars of cuts on his right wrist
and across the first Joint of his forefinger on his left hand and has no other notable marks
or scars that I have observed of a black complexion
(seal)           In Testimony Whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal
                   of my office this sixteenth day of October A D 1837
