Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application hath been made to
me by a negro man named William Wheatley for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
to the acts of assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts free
negroe's and mulattoe's are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention
of a certificate of being free born; And whereas also upon the oath of Jesse D. Hicks of
Caroline County that the said negro man named William Wheatley for whom this
certificate is made was free born; I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby certify that from his own account he was twenty one years of age
some time in July last past five feet nine and one half inches high or thereabouts
Complexion black was born and raised in Caroline County and has a large
scar of a burn on his right elbow and the finger next to his little one on the right
hand is crooked at the second joint and has a small scar of a scratch or cut
just under his left eye brown and has no other notable marks or scars that
I have observed
(seal)               In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix
                        the public seal of my office this 21.st day of August A D. 1837

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas heretofore to wit; on the tenth
day of June Eighteen hundred and eighteen a certain William F Harper of Caroline County
by a deed of Manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded among the land records
of Caroline County did Manumit and set free a certain negro woman named Jemima to be free
on the first day of July eighteen hundred and eighteen and the said negro woman named
Jemima haveing made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts of
Assembly in such cases made and provided  And Whereas also upon the oath of John K
Harper of Caroline County that the said negro woman ^named^ Jemima for whom this certificate is made
is the same person mentioned in the said Manumission I do therefore grant her said application
and hereby certify that she is about fifty years of age five feet five inches high or thereabouts of a
dark mulattoe complexion was born on the Western Shore was raised in Caroline County and has
a small wen on her right foot just above her great toe and has no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed

                              seal of my office this this 5 day of September Anno Domini 1837
