State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application hath been made to
me by a negro man named James Ryons for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts
free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention
of a certificate of being free born  And whereas also upon the oath of
William Orrell of Caroline County that the said negro man named James
Ryons for whom this certificate was made was free born; I do therefore grant his said
application and hereby Certify that from his account he was twenty one years of age
on the fifth day of May instant five feet five and one half inches high or thereabouts of a
dark mulattoe Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has a scar of a
cut on his left wrist and another scar of a cut on his right hand just above the thumb
joint and has lost his left eye and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)         In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
                 seal of my office this 23.d day of May 1837

mulatto woman named Nancy Webb for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts
of Assembly in such case made and provided; by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are
permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born; And
Whereas also upon the Oath of Thomas Eaton of Caroline County that the said mulatto woman
named Nancy Webb for whom this certificate is made was free born; I do therefore grant her
said application and hereby certify that from her father's account she is now a little upwards
of twenty one years of age she is five feet four and a half inches high or thereabout
has a small scar of a scratch ^partly^ across her right cheek nearly in a range with her
mouth and no other notable scar or mark that I have observed she is of a light mulatto
complexion and was born and raised in Caroline County
(Seal)   In testimony whereof I hereto set my hand and affix the public seal of my office
            this 3th day of August Anno Domini 1837            Jo Richardson  Clk of
