State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been
made to me by a negro man named James Parmer for a Certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided by which
said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this State
upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born, And whereas also upon the
oath of Marcey Fountain of Caroline County that the said negro man named
James Parmer for whom this Certificate ^is made^ was free born, I do therefore grant his
said application and hereby certify that from his ^own^ account he was twenty two years
of age the fifteenth day of October last past he is five feet eight and a half inches
high or thereabouts of a black complexion was born and raised in Caroline County
and has a small scar of a cut on the top of his forehead about his right eye
and two other scars of a cut one obliquily across each of the first joints of the
two first fingers of his left hand and another scar of a cut nearly lineal with
and across the knuckle of the little finger of his left hand and no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed

                seal of my office this 25th day of March Anno Domini 1837

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application hath been made
to me by a negro woman named Melvina Driver for a Certificate of her freedom agreeably
to the acts of Assembly in such cases made and provided by which said acts
free negroes and Mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention
of a certificate of being free born; and whereas upon the oath of Leonora Mezzick of
Caroline County that the said negro woman named Melvina Driver for whom this certificate
is made was free born I do therefore grant her said application and hereby Certify
that from her fathers account she was twenty years of age some time in the fall of
eighteen hundred and thirty six she is four feet eleven and three quarters inches high
or thereabouts of a black Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has
