State of Maryland Caroline County to wit whereas heretofore to wit
on the first day of August eighteen hundred and eight a certain Abraham
Jump of Caroline County by deed of manumission duly executed
acknowledged and recorded among the land records of Caroline County
did manumit and set free a certain negro woman named Lucretia and
her male issue when they should arrive to the age of twenty one years and
the said negro man named Major Byas the issue of the above named Lucretia
haveing made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to
the act of assembly in such case made and provided and whereas also upon
the oath of Alexander Jump of Caroline County that the said negro man
named Major Byas for whom this Certificate is made is free I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby Certify that from his own account he
was twenty one years of age some time in March last past five feet five and
one half inches high or thereabouts of a black complexion was borned and
raised in Caroline County and has a scar of a burn on the back of his right
hand near the first joint of his thumb and another large scar of a cut on
his right leg just below the calf and has no other notable marks or scars that
I have observed
(seal)           In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
                   public seal of my office this tenth day of January Anno Domini 1837

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been
made to me by a negro woman named Sarah Ann Bell for a certificate of
her freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such cases made and provided
by which said acts free negroe's and mulattoe's are permitted to travel out of this
State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born:  And whereas also
upon the oath of Maria Medcalf of Caroline County that the said negro woman
name Sarah Ann Bell for whom this certificate is made was free born; I do therefore
grant her said application and hereby certify that from her own account she was eighteen
years of age some time August last past; five feet four and three qarter inches high
or thereabouts complexion nearly black was born and raised in Caroline County and
has no notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
