Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made
to me by a negro woman named Elizabeth Hicks for a certificate of her freedom
agreeably to the acts of assembly in such cases made and provided by which said
acts free negroe's and mulattoe's are permitted to travel out of this State upon the
obtention of a certificate of being free born; And Whereas also upon the
oath of Samuel Culbreth junior of Caroline County aforesaid that the
said negro woman named Elizabeth Hicks for whom this certificate is
made was free born; I do therefore grant her said application and hereby
certify that from her own account she was twenty years of age some time
in March last past five feet one and a quater inches high or
thereabouts of a mulattoe complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County and has a scar of a cut on the outer part of her big toe on her left
foot and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)            In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and
                    affix the public seal of my office this 19th day of
                    September Anno Domini 1836      Jo Richardson  Clk of
                            Cost $1.00                           Caroline County Court

of her freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such cases made and provided
by which said acts free negroes and mulattoe's are permitted to travel out of
this State upon the obtention of a Certificate of being free born; ^and whereas also upon the oath of Samuel Culbreth jun.r of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro
woman named Mary Brown for whom this certificate is made was free born;^ I do
therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that from
her own account she is now about sixteen years of age four feet
Eleven and one half inches high or thereabouts of a dark mulattoe
complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has
a very small scar of a cut on her right ring finger and between
first and second joints and has no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed
(seal)         In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name
                 and affix the public seal of my office this 19th
                 day of September Anno Domini 1836
