grant his said application and hereby certify that from his own
account he was twenty two years of age the twenty third day of
May last five feet nine and one half inches high or thereabouts of
a bright mulattoe complexion born and raised in Caroline County
aforesaid and has a scar of a cut on the inside of his left hand
which extends down between his little and right fingers occasioned
from the cut of a scythe and no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix
           the public seal of my office this first day of September
           Anno Domini Eighteen hundred and thirty six

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application hath been made to me by
a Negro man Named Samuel Hicks for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly
in such cases made and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted
to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas
also upon the oath of Samuel Culbreth junior of Caroline County aforesaid that the said
Negro man named Samuel Hicks for whom this Certificate is made was free born; I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby certify that from his own account he will be
twenty three years of age some time this faul five feet seven and three quarter inches high or
thereabout of a dark ^mulattoe^ complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has
a scar of cut about an inch long on the inner part of his left foot and
several other small scars on his left shin and other scar of a cut about
an inch long on the under part of his left arm and another on his
right shin and has no other notable marks or scars that I have
observed                In Testimony Whereof I hereto subscribe
