my name and affix the public seal of my office this 29th day of
August A D. 1836

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath
been made to me by a mulattoe man named Eli Grinage for a certificate
of his freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such cases made and
provided by which said acts free negroe's and mulattoe's are permitted to
travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free
born and whereas also upon the oath of Matthew Driver of Caroline
County aforesaid that the said mulattoe man named Eli Grinage for
whom this certificate is made was free born; I do therefore grant his
said application and hereby certify that from his own account
he was twenty five years of age on the second day of January last
that he is five feet Eleven and one half inches high or thereabouts of a
bright mulattoe complexion born and raised in Caroline
County aforesaid and has a small scar on the inside of his left
wrist occasioned from an ulcer and no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed

                  affix the public seal of my office this first day of
                  September Anno Domini Eighteen hundred and thirty six
