Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application hath been made to me by a negro man named
Eli Russum for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such Case made and provided
by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of
a Certificate of being free born  And whereas allso upon the oath of Caleb P. Davis of Caroline County that
the said negro man named Eli Russum for whom this Certificate is made was free born I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby Certify that from the account of the said Caleb P Davis he
was twenty two years of age sometime in Christmas week last past that he is five feet five and a
half inches high or thereabouts of a black Complexion that he was borned and raised in Caroline
County and has a small scar of a burn or bite on his wright wrist and has no other notable mark or
scar that I have observed
                                        In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
                                        seal of my office this 24th day of August Anno Domini 1836

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath
been made to me by a negro woman named Mary Webb for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such cases made and
provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoe's are permitted to
travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being
free born And whereas also upon the oath of Robert Walker of
Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro woman named Mary
Webb for whom this Certificate is made was free born; I do therefore
grant her said application and hereby certify that from her own account
she is twenty three years of age some time in this present month (August)
that she is four feet nine and three quater inches high or thereabouts of a
dark brown complexion born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid
and has a scar of a cut about one inch and a half long on the right
cheek nearly perpendicular and another scar of a cut on the left
side of her jaw nearly horizontal with the jaw bone; and another
scar nearly round about the size of a five cent piece and another
large scar of a burn on the inner side of her left arm and a
scar of a cut on the inside of the same arm and no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed
