Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born; And whereas also upon the oath of William A Ford of Caroline
County that the said negro woman named Mary Bracco for whom this certificate
is made was free born; I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify
that from her own account she is about seventeen years of age five feet one
inch high or thereabouts of a bright mulattoe complexion born and raised in
Caroline County and has a small scar on the upper part of her nose and
a natural marke on the right side of her neck and no other notable marks
or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
            seal of my office this 13th day of June Anno Domini 1836

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made to me by a
coloured man named Henry Wright for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act
of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and mulattoe's
are permitted to travel out this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free
born and whereas also upon the oath of Nancy Kirkman of Caroline County that
the said coloured man named Henry Wright for whom this certificate is made
was free born   I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that
he is twenty years of age or thereabouts he is about five feet seven inches high
of a dark brown complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and
has a mark on his right shoulder nearly white a scar on his right hand near
his wrist opposite his fore finger and two other scars on the same hand near the
as middle knuckles and also another scar on the back part of his head caused
as he says by a blow from a Grubbing hoe and no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed       In Testimony whereof I hereto
(seal)   subscribe my name and affix the public seal of my office this
           28th day of May Anno Domini 1825      Jo Richardson  Clk of

aforesaid copy of certificate of freedom is truly and faithfully taken
and copied from the original this day returned to me in a defaced
state      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name
