Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit         Whereas application hath been
made to me by a negro man named James Emory for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
to the acts of Assembly in such cases made and provided by which said acts free negroes and
mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of
being free born; And whereas also upon the oath of Edward R. Perry of Caroline County
aforesaid that the said negro man named James Emory for whom this certificate is made
was free born; I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from the
account of the said Edward R Perry he the said negro man named James Emory is now
about thirty years of age that he is five feet eight and a quarter inches high or thereabout
of a black complexion was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid and has no notable
notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of my office
           this 23.d day of May Anno Domini 1836                  Jo Richardson  Clk of

Assembly in such cases made and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are
permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born; And
whereas also upon the oath of Edward R. Perry of Caroline County aforesaid that the said
negro man named Charles Gibson for whom this certificate is made was free born; I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby certify that from the testimony of the said Edward R.
Perry he the said negro man named Charles Gibson is now about twenty one years of age that
he is five feet eight and three quarter inches high or thereabouts of a black complexion born
and raised in Caroline County aforesaid and has a small scar of a cut on the out side of the
small of his right leg a little above the ancle and no other notable marks or scars that I have
observed
(seal)   In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of my office
