State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made
to me by a negro man named John A Bryan for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
to the acs of Assembly in such cases made and provided by which said acts free
negroe's and mulattoe's are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention
of a certificate of being free born; And whereas also upon the oath of Delahay
Sparklin of Caroline County that the said negro man named John A Bryan
for whom this certificate is made was free born; I do therefore grant his said
application and hereby certify that from his own account he was twenty two
years of age the fourteenth day of February last five feet six and a quater
inches high or thereabouts Complexion Black born and raised in Caroline
County and has five large and several small scars of ulcers on and about
his right shoulder and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
           public seal of my office this eighteenth day of May A. D. 1836

    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;      Whereas heretofore to wit; on the seventeenth day
of May in the year eighteen hundred and one a certain Batchelor Chance of the County and State
aforesaid by deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded among the land records of
Caroline County aforesaid did manumit and set free a certain negro boy named Hercules to be
free from and after the expiration of nine years from the date of the said manumission and whereas
the said negro Hercules now a man has made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
according to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided and being satisfied by the affirmation
of Batchelor G. Chance of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named Hercules
for whom this certificate is made is the same person mentioned in the said Deed of Manumission I do
therefore grant his said application and hereby certify from the testimony of the said Batchelor G Chance
That he the said negro man named Hercules is now about forty seven years of age that he is five feet six
& a half inches high or thereabouts of a black complexion born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid and
has a large scar of a cut on the back of his left arm about half way between the elbow and shoulder
joints and another scar in his left eyebrow and no other notable marks or scars that I have
observed      In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of my office
(seal)            this 23.d day of May Anno Domini 1836
