Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

the oath of John Stevens of Caroline County that the said coloured man named
Daniel Black for whom this certificate is made was free born  I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby certify that according to his own account
he was twenty one years of age the twenty ninth day of October last five
feet five and a half inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline
County of a black complexion has a small scar of a cut on the fore part of
his left leg just above the instep and another small scar of a scratch or cut
on the right side of his nose and no other notable marks or scars that
I have observed      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name
(seal)   and affix the public seal of my office this 12th day of July

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas heretofore to wit on the seventeenth
day of september in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and four a certain
Sarah Lane by Deed of Manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded
among the Land records of Caroline County did manumit and set free a certain
negro woman named Alice to serve twenty two years and four months after the
date of the Manumission and the said negro woman named Alice having made
application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the act of assembly
in such case made and provided.  And whereas also upon the oath of William Cooper
of Caroline County that the said negro woman named Alice for whom this certificate
is made is the same person mentioned in the said Manumission  I do therefore
grant her said application and hereby certify that from her age as expressed
in the said Manumission she was twenty eight years of age the tenth day of
February last five feet three and a half inches high or thereabouts was born and raised
in Caroline County of a dark brown complexion has a scar of a cut obliquely across
her right wrist and another small scar on the outside of her right wrist joint and
another large scar of a burn nearly round on the top of her right arm nearly half
way between the elbow and shoulder joints and no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name
(seal)    and affix the public seal of my Office this 16th day of July Anno
            Domini 1828
