Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Caroline County of a brown complexion five feet eight and three quarter inches
^high^ or thereabouts has a long slim perpendicular scar on his left Cheek extending from
opposite the corner of his left eye to nearly opposite the Corner of his mouth and another
small scar of a bite on his right under jaw and a natural mark on his right
breast and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
           In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
(seal)   seal of my office this 31st day of May Anno Domini 1828

    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application hath been made
to me by a coloured woman named Kitty Byers for a certificate of her freedom agreeably
to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act
free negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention
of a certificate of being free and whereas also upon the oath of Deborah Jones
of Caroline County that the said negro woman named Kitty Byers for whom
this certificate is made was free born  I do therefore grant her said application and
hereby certify that according to her own account she was Sixteen years of age
the fifteenth day of September last five feet four and three quarter inches high
or thereabouts of a dark molatto complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County has a small scar of a cut across the left side of her upper lip and
another scar which she says was cut by a switch on the upper part of her right
arm above the elbow and another scar of a scratch and a small scar of a
burn on the inside of her right arm between the elbow and wrist and a large
scar of a burn on the top of her right foot and another tollerable large scar of a
burn on the top of her left foot and no other notable marks or scars that I
have observed.      In Testimony whereof I hereto Subscribe my name and
(seal)    affix the public seal of my office this 12th day of June Anno Domini
