9 have released from slavery liberated manumitted and set free and by these presents do hereby liberate manumit and set free my negro boy Thomas Matthews to take effect on Jan.y 1.st 1846 also my negro boy Jimy Wilson to take effect on Jan.y 1.st 1850 also my negro boy William Bias to take effect on Jan.y 1.st 1861 also my negro boy John H Smith to take effect on Jan.y 1.st 1862 also my negro Girl Sophy Davis to take effect Jan.y 1.st 1856 also my negro Girl Ellen Hobbs to take effect Jan.y 1.st 1858 at which dates they will all be of age and able to work and gain a livelihood and maintenance and them the said negroes I do declare to be free manumitted and discharged from all manner of service or servitude to me my Executors or administrators on and after the dates above mentioned. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 30 day of December in the year of our Lord 1844 Witnesses Ja.s Cheston Sam Cheston (seal) Gassaway Winterson At the foot of the aforegoing was thus written to wit: Anne Arundel County to wit: On this 30.th day of December 1844 personally appears Samuel Cheston before the subscriber a Justice of the peace in and for the County aforesaid and acknowledged the above deed or instrument of writing thereof and the acts of assembly in such case made and provided.
