10 and in consideration of the services rendered unto me by my negro woman Phillis Johnson have released from slavery liberated manumitted and set free my negro woman Phillis Johnson being of the age of 38 years and able to work and gain a sufficient livelihood and maintenance and the said Phillis Johnson I do declare to be henceforth free manumitted and discharged from all manner of servitude or service to me my executors or administrators forever. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this second day of April in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and forty five Signed sealed and Elizabeth Harwood (seal) delivered in the presence of W.m Glover Jos. H Nicholson At the foot of the foregoing was thus written to wit Anne Arundel County to wit Be it remembered that on this second day of April in the year eighteen hundred and forty five personally appears Elizabeth Harwood party to the within instrument of writing before me the Subscriber a justice of the peace of the State of Maryland in and for said County and acknowledged the within instrument of writing to be his act and deed for the purposes therein mentioned and the negro woman Phillis Johnson within named to be henceforth manumitted according to the act of Assembly in such case made and provided and I certify that the said Elizabeth Harwood is known to me to be the same and identical with the person named as and professing to be the party grantee in the foregoing instrument |
